Crucial Insights from the Heineken Champions Cup's First Round

With the opening salvo of the 2025-26 Champions Cup concluded, we explore the primary lessons highlighted by the weekend's action.

Gallic supremacy has defined the competition in recent years, with the previous five victors all hailing from France's Top 14. However, the opening round featured a number of statement victories from emerging rivals.

Bordeaux Look Set to Retain Their Crown

Current holders Bordeaux Begles were imperious in Europe last season, overpowering Toulouse in the last four and afterwards Northampton in the final.

Positioned sixth in the domestic standings, questions have been asked about their capacity to retain the feat now. But, in the first round, Bordeaux issued a reminder that they are fully equipped of securing consecutive championships with a free-flowing triumph on foreign soil in South Africa.

Faced with a challenging fixture at a hostile venue against a powerful Bulls side boasting stars like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they found themselves trailing 33-22 at the break.

Yet, as champions do, they displayed their class in the second half, fighting back to claim a 46-33 victory – holding the Bulls to zero after the interval.

France international phenoms Damian Penaud and World Player of the Year nominee Louis Bielle-Biarrey were among the try-scorers. Any outfit with such firepower on the edges stands a good chance against any competition.

Powerful Bath Appear Equipped of Going the Distance

Bath's sole success in this competition dates back almost three decades ago. In the years since, they have probably never been better equipped to secure another title.

The current English champions are leading the way at home after six games and will be hoping to transfer that success into continental competition – particularly following a unexpected elimination in the last campaign.

Johann van Graan's side looked a extremely well-rounded and composed outfit in their 40-14 victory against Munster, who are third in the Celtic league.

They blend creative spark – earning the extra point within 20 minutes at the Rec – with defensive steel, holding their visitors at a distance when they looked like mounting a fightback.

With stars such as Finn Russell and Ben Spencer directing play and strength in depth across the team, they are surely genuine challengers for a continental title since 1998.

Bath's defining match in the pools last season came in the second round, an heartbreaking 22-21 setback at Benetton with a rotated team.

Now with a league trophy in their history and leading in England once more, Van Graan may feel able to place greater emphasis on the Champions Cup now.

Glasgow Give Sale a Major Blow

There are powerful sides in every pool, but Pool One appears poised to be one of the most competitive.

In the existing pool system, a lot is made about winning your home games, which is why Glasgow's away victory at Sale on the first day might just turn out to be vital.

The Glasgow Warriors were two scores behind after 20 minutes but fought back impressively, and two tries during the beginning of the second half gave them a precious maximum haul.

With this result, they provided their hopes of advancing a positive start and, in turn, inflicted a damaging defeat to Sale.

With the French giants – dominant 56-19 winners against the Sharks – and Saracens, who brushed aside Clermont, also in the pool, we are likely to see many thrilling contests.

And what of Glasgow's old rivals Edinburgh? They turned in one of their best European performances in a long time to shock heavyweights Toulon 33-20, on a fine weekend for rugby in Scotland.

Will Ioane Be the Final Piece of the Leinster Jigsaw?

If there's one team you would predict to be there or thereabouts at the sharp end of the season in Europe, it would be multiple champions Leinster.

Yet in recent campaigns it hasn't gone to plan, as they have promised much but fallen short. Beaten finalists three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked the team to beat last season after backing up a 62-0 thrashing of Harlequins in the round of 16 with a 52-0 demolition over Glasgow in the quarter-final.

It was believed that Kiwi international Jordie Barrett would be the final piece to take them over the line, but they were ambushed and endured a shock loss to Northampton Saints in the last four.

Now they are bringing in another Kiwi, this time with Rieko Ioane, who provided a try assist on his bow in Saturday's 45-28 win over Harlequins.

Will Ioane prove to bring the trophy back to Ireland for the first occasion since 2018?

Stormers Seem Prepared to Challenge

Since the South African sides entered the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the furthest any of their teams have got is the last eight, and last year not a single one managed to make it out of the group stage, with plenty of squads not at full strength used.

Is this the year that turns around? The Stormers are top of the URC and started their continental journey with a 26-17 victory on the road at Bayonne on Friday.

The reactions after the game were promising too, with players and coaches speaking of their aspirations, and the caliber of stars Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse absent for the round-one win.

The Stormers seem the best bet for a SA franchise to go deep into the competition, yet do not rule out the Sharks and Bulls, who each suffered defeat this weekend but did play formidable opponents respectively.

Saints and Pau Serve Up a Memorable Match

There were multiple possibilities for best fixture, and this one was right up there.

Pau have been having a superb season, led by Argentine internationals Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and former Wasps scrum-half Dan Robson.

They are right now second in the French championship and the stadium was buzzing at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
