An defense official has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, while staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified information in any vehicles.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified information while travelling in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
This wider security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in every areas of official activities, including transport usage to discussions practices.
